Cate Smierciak is a freelance media-maker, writer, facilitator, coordinator, and advocate for marginalized perspectives in entertainment and the arts.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University, where she studied Radio/Television/Film, Art Theory & Practice, and participated in the Animate Arts program.

In 2009, she received a DAAD Artist Scholar Grant to study directing at the HFF Konrad Wolf, Potsdam, Babelsberg. She has also completed workshops at the Frei Universität, Berlin, Akademie

der Künste Berlin, and Tandem Sprachschule, Köln.

Cate’s interests lie in the overlap of emerging technology, bridging (pop) cultural gaps, the age-old art of storytelling, and the myriad possibilities of what “audience” can mean today and in the future.

Originally from Chicago, Cate spent five years based in Berlin, and is most comfortable living out of her suitcase and on the Internet. She is a sucker for adventure and connectivity.

Cate is currently based in Silverlake, Los Angeles, where she is a founding member of the filmmaking collective, Bureau of Ships. She also hangs out in cyberspace with @LadyBits, a collection of tech-savvy women creating the content we want to consume.

Cate still holds the record for most pull-ups in her 3rd grade gym class. She is currently working on her knife skills. She also made this whole website by herself.
